The Hoax

Director Lasse Hallström offers a brisk account of the scam that shook the literary community with this semi-comic biographical drama starring Richard Gere as the man who sold a fraudulent biography of Howard Hughes to publishing giant McGraw Hill. The year was 1971; the Vietnam War was raging and protestors filled the streets. Clifford Irving (Gere) was a struggling author with bold ambitions, and the determination needed to see them through. When Irving's attempt to sell his latest novel to McGraw Hill via his in-house publisher, Andrea Tate (Hope Davis), falls through at the last minute, the frustrated author loudly proclaims that his next novel will be "the book of the century." Upon returning to his wife Edith's (Marcia Gay Harden) makeshift studio, the humiliated author catches a glimpse of eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes on a magazine cover. Later, almost jokingly, Irving and his best friend Dick Suskind (Alfred Molina) begin to fantasize about a scenario in which the author convinces his publishers that he has been personally selected by Hughes to pen the billionaire's memoirs. The revenge fantasy becomes a complicated reality, however, when Irving and Suskind approach skeptical McGraw Hill heavy Shelton Fisher (Stanley Tucci) with a series of forged letters presumably written by Hughes himself and offering unwavering support for the project. His credibility continually questioned as the ante is upped at every turn, Irving is forced to maintain the increasingly difficult charade as he strong-arms McGraw Hill to pay "Hughes" an unheard-of one million dollars for the rights to his life story, acquires a the illegally procured documents that will provide the foundation for the book, and works around the clock to meet his publisher's deadline.

Live Free Or Die

An aspiring small-town criminal edges in on the family business of an old acquaintance, only to find things quickly spinning out of control when an emotionally unstable cop begins investigating the case. Clueless criminal wannabe John "Rugged" Rudgate (Aaron Stanford) spends most of his time forging rebate coupons and selling speakers on the streets, but upon receiving a peculiar blast from the past he begins to dream of more lucrative criminal endeavors. It seems that John's old friend Jeff Lagrand (Paul Schneider) has arrived back in town to assist his sardonic sister (Zooey Deschanel) in maintaining the storage facility bestowed upon the pair by their recently deceased father. Of course, any self-respecting criminal would see this as an opportunity to make a pretty penny, and despite his small-time background Rugged is now ready to make the leap into the big leagues. Though his attempt to pry his way into the family business at first seems to be going along swimmingly, Rugged soon finds his criminal endeavors thwarted by a particularly sensitive cop (Michael Rapaport) who, despite his emotional fragility, remains determined to crack the case.

The only thing I know about this movie is that it was playing in the cinemas months ago. Just because of Nicole Kidman, Robert Downey Jr. and the decent rating I will give this a try, I’m curious what this girl done again. Following his breakthrough feature, SECRETARY, director Steven Shainberg creates a ravishing imaginary portrait of the visionary artist Diane Arbus in his new film, FUR: AN IMAGINARY PORTRAIT OF DIANE ARBUS. Much as an actual Arbus photo transports us into strange and unfamiliar worlds, FUR travels through the looking glass to explore the transformation of a shy woman into a powerfully original artist. Oscar winner Nicole Kidman stars as “Diane Arbus,” a devoted wife and mother whose innate talents and dark obsessions are profoundly at odds with the conventional life she leads in 1958 New York. Oscar-nominee Robert Downey Jr. co-stars as Lionel, an enigmatic new neighbor who launches Diane on her journey to becoming the artist she is meant to be.

This movie has a lot of connections to classic of this genre, Hitchcock’s The Birds - they are ravens here though. Of course it can’t beat the original, but there are some nice & scary scenes. Released on 1 CD with Polish subtitles and standard image and video quality just for you. One last day. That’s all small town sheriff Wayne (Sean Patrick Flanery THE BOONDOCK SAINTS, POWDER), has left before moving away to a better life with his wife Cynthia (Kristin Booth). But what starts as a typical day, soon turns into a deadly battle for survival. KAW is the story of a bustling community that comes under attack by a conspiracy of ravens. Clyde (Stephen McHattie) was the first to notice the aggressive behavior of the birds as they attacked his farm. But since Clyde long ago lost his good standing in the town, his rantings and complaints are summarily ignored…until things take a drastic turn for the worst. As it will soon be discovered, local farmer Oskar (John Ralston) has been hiding some unnatural developments from the townsfolk…and this leads to the deadly assault the town now must struggle to survive. When the local girls’ soccer team comes under siege by the killer ravens, everyone desperately fights their way towards the town diner.

Here’s one more movie filmed in Australia. We don’t have many of those, so why not to give it a small support by posting some info about it. Solo is a crime thriller with actors who will be probably unknown for many people, but these actors are very popular in Australia. This movie also won few prizes and competitions in Australia. Quality is standard, 1 CD release.
In SOLO, the first film to come out of Project Greenlight in Australia, COLIN FRIELS plays Barrett, a hit-man for the Sydney mob but, after his latest assignment, which involves dismembering a corpse and dumping the pieces in the harbour, he wants to quit, to retire. Easier said than done. Though the Wood Royal Commission is breathing down the necks of the criminals, Barrett’s boss, Reno, Linal Haft, refuses to accept his resignation. And the crooked cops, led by Keeling, Vince Colosimo, are equally determined that Barrett can’t quit. Barrett is ordered to do one more job: eliminate a young student, Billie, Bojana Novakovic, who is writing a thesis on organised crime and who is getting too close for comfort.

The story returns back to 1948 and talks about a real event which affected the current world situation and the origin of Israel. The quality is pretty fine on 2 CDs with MP3 audio. A tale of friendship between two men, one Jewish and the other Arab, as the state of Israel is being created. The movie will not be enjoyable to or appreciated by everyone. If you are an Arab or Jew extremist you will probably leave the cinema in the middle of the movie - If you wish to see a one-sided, “the truth is here” movie I suggest you see a Michael Moore movie.But if you wish to see a movie with a brilliant script that tries to touch the human triumph and tragedies of the 1948 war with a superb cast that will make you shed a tear – this movie for you.

Little Children

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Todd Field teams with novelist Tom Perrotta to adapt Perrotta's acclaimed novel concerning the suburban malaise experienced by a handful of small-town individuals whose intersecting lives converge in a variety of surprising, and sometimes ominous, ways. An English literature major who never envisioned a fate as a soccer mom, Sarah has a growing dissatisfaction with her successful husband (Gregg Edelman) that parallels Brad's increasing frustration with his inability to pass the bar and connect with his wife, Kathy (Jennifer Connelly), a successful documentary filmmaker. It's not long before the dejected pair is meeting for a series of illicit afternoon trysts as their unsuspecting spouses work and their children lie quietly napping. Meanwhile, after the community is riled by the return of a convicted sex offender (Jackie Earle Haley) who leaves the concerned parents scrambling to protect their young ones, an attempt made by Sarah and Brad to legitimize their clandestine relationship by dining together with their respective spouses begins to awaken Kathy's suspicions about the fidelity of her husband.

Donnie Darko - The Director's Cut

Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a bright and charming high-school student who also has a dark and willfully eccentric side; he does little to mask his contempt for many of his peers and enjoys challenging the authority of the adults around him. The true story of the woman who created some of the most beloved characters in children's literature comes to the screen in this drama leavened with elements of comedy and romance. Beatrix Potter (Renée Zellweger) is a imaginative but gently eccentric woman living in the socially and intellectually confining circumstances of Victorian England. Potter's wealthy parents are eager for her to marry a successful man and settle down, but she has ideas of her own, and has been writing and illustrating a series of stories for children centered around a character she calls Peter Rabbit. Potter's efforts to find a publisher for her stories prove difficult, but in time she finds a firm who agrees to give her book a chance, and Norman Warne (Ewan McGregor) is put in charge of the project. While Warne is new to the publishing game, he believes Potter has great talent and potential, and throws himself into the work with enthusiasm. A strong personal bond grows between Potter and Warne, and in time he asks her to marry him; however, Beatrix's parents do not approve of Norman, and she is forced to choose between her mother and father and the man she loves. Norman's sister Mille (Emily Watson) urges Beatrix to follow her heart, and she accepts Norman's proposal, but fate has other plans. Miss Potter was directed by Chris Noonan, who created an international sensation with his first feature film, Babe.

Plane Dead

This demented and adorably over-the-top gory zombie flick was presented and introduced here at the Belgian Horror & Fantasy Festival by its writer/creator Scott Thomas. He claims that, in spite of all the obvious plot-similarities with "Snakes on a Plane", his film is definitely NOT a quick cash-in on the huge success of the 2006 summer-blockbuster and that the basic concept and the pre-production phase of "Plane Dead" actually predate "Snakes on a Plane". Well, I don't know if all that is true, but I tend to believe Thomas because he's such a nice guy and he seemed very confident. Moreover, even if "Plane Dead" simply was a rip-off of the popular Sam L. Jackson hit, I still wouldn't care that much, because it's such a tremendously entertaining and enthusiast splatter-flick! As long as you don't expect new and groundbreaking story lines and/or highly intellectual dialogs, "Plane Dead" honestly can't fail to amuse you. In most departments, it's even far better and more appealing to horror fanatics than "Snakes on a Plane", because it's a lot faster, cheesier, gorier and shamelessly features all the standard clichés us genre fans love so much. Safely protected in the cargo-hold of the red-eye flight from L.A. to Paris, a mysterious scientific experiment is transported out of the US by its malicious creators. The unscrupulous Dr. Leo Bennett and his loyal researchers developed a virus that rapidly destroys human DNA, only to revive the infected victim again as a bloodthirsty and unstoppable zombie. He plans to sell his formula to the military in order to create the ultimate soldier, of course, but some unanticipated turbulence and noisy passengers on the 747-flight cause the female "test-case" zombie to resurrect a little early, and she immediately begins to feast her way through crew and passengers. Once bitten, the victim turns into a zombie as well, and pretty soon the plane is overrun by seemingly more zombies than there were passengers in the first place. It perhaps takes slightly too long before the zombies run loose on the plane, but when they do "Plane Dead" turns into a non-stop series of laughs, creative deaths and extreme gore. Apparently, only stereotypes were allowed aboard this flight and it's always a lot of fun to watch those getting killed off one by one. Naturally it's the elderly pilot's last flight before retirement, there's the heroic copper – who eventually has to save the day - transporting a witty criminal, arguing teen couples, sexy yet empty-headed stewardesses, couples with marriage issues and Tiger Woods' biggest competitor himself! The gore is guaranteed to please people, as the script features several ingenious new methods to kill zombies, like an umbrella through the head, nine-iron golf clubs and of course airplane engines. Be honest, what would you rather get face-to-face with whilst stuck in an inescapable location: ordinary snakes, albeit a little venomous ... or filthy, virulent, ravenous and outrageous zombies? There are quite a few recognizable faces in the cast, like Kevin J. O'Connor (the creep from "Lord of Illusions" and "Deep Rising"), Erick Avari and Richard Tyson. The lines and characters are often very funny, the make-up effects are delightfully campy in an old-fashioned way and there even is an occasional moment of genuine suspense. "Plane Dead" is awesome horror-entertainment and I hope Scott Thomas will enjoy the success he deserves with it.

A beautiful teacher Miss Panor has six students. They decide to play a cruel prank on Ms.Panor and her reputation is ruined. The teacher then turns to black magic to exact gruesome revenge.” Art of the Devil 2" is a gore-soaked horror film which was directed by a team of seven filmmakers known as the Ronin Team. The direction is solid, the cast is pretty good, but the storyline is hardly dynamic. When the gore appears it is unrelenting and disgusting. Miss Panor is a great villain and truly remorseless killer. The gore is rather hard to stomach for example toenails are torn out, teeth are plucked, live geckos burst out of a boy's back, one hapless girl gouges her own eyes out and the skin on man's legs is burned by a blow-torch. Overall, I enjoyed "Art of the Devil 2" more than its predecessor. Give it a try, you might like it.

Shutter - South East Asia Horror

After watching a Discovery documentary focused on “Horror of Asia”, I decided to post some of those scary South East Asia and Hong Kong movies. So for the next few posts, its all about “ASIAN HORROR”. Frankly, if you haven’t seen these movies, you are totally missing out on something really frightening. So download it, switch off the lights and scream till your lungs dries out!

A shock accident on a lonely country road has terrifying repercussions for a Bangkok photographer and his frightened wife in the Thai horror sensation that chilled audiences at the Gerardmer and Bangkok International Film Festivals. Distracted during a late night drive down a long stretch of country road, Tun accidentally runs down a pedestrian who seemed to have materialized out of thin air. Though Tun and his wife Jane attempt to relinquish themselves of responsibility by fleeing the scene and hastily returning to Bangkok, it seems as if someone or something is intent on ensuring that they don't forget their moonlit transgression. When Tun begins to see spectral figures in the images he snaps and Jane finds her dreams taking an unusually dark turn, the pair immediately decides to return to the scene of the accident to find out what became of their hit-and-run victim. Strangely, upon investigating the accident it begins to appear as if there had been no report of the accident and no victim to speak of. Upon returning to Bangkok Tun's friends begin dying at an alarming rate, leaving the pair desperate to unravel the murderous mystery before it consumes them body and soul.
